Yuhua Chang’s Biography

Yuhua Chang is an art and culture lover who learnt to draw and paint. Since elementary school, she has approached art and drawings. She vividly remembered when one of her sketches made for special national days was selected for a school exhibit celebrating for Taiwanese army. She kept cultivating her passion, practicing oil painting and sketching during her travels to Europe, the USA, and Japan. While on a trip to the USA to improve her English with an intensive course, she met one of her best friends, a young Japanese woman of her same age, with whom she could share the passion for drawing and learn new techniques and styles.

While Yuhua was visiting her in 2016, she decided to keep a journal of her experience, alternating Mandarin with English for sharing her notes with her friend. Almost ten years later, while helping Valentina with her fieldwork, she started to do journaling as a daily routine. In “Traces for Guanyin”, we can admire some of her illustrated fieldnotes.
